EBEA COVID-19 Terminal Capacity Planning Tool

EBEA Consulting initiative:

EBEA Consulting has developed an analysis tool to support airports with operations planning through the post-pandemic industry recovery process and beyond. The COVID-19 Terminal Capacity Planning Tool is simple and user-friendly. It is designed to provide insights that help understand the COVID-related impacts within the airport terminals, such as physical distancing, queuing capacity degradation or increased service times.

 

The tool allows airports to evaluate operational equipment requirements, queue length, queue time, capacity breaking points, and recommended mitigation strategies.

We offer this standalone solution at a minimal cost with no subscription fees or systems integration needed - all this to support a rapid deployment to aid airport planning teams and decision-makers.

EBEA Consulting Solution:

Our tool provides the expected queue performance of the main passenger processes under the appropriate physical distancing regime, dependent on airport, region, or country requirements.

 
Key analysis
inputs include the expected passenger demand, relevant passenger characteristics, available/potential infrastructure and associated process times, available queue/dwell area, and target queue times. In absence of airport input, EBEA Consulting can use benchmarking data and industry standards/best practices.

To easily capture all the critical model variables, inputs entry has been designed around the following categories

Physical distancing factors

Including space per passenger and equipment availability.

Passenger characteristics

Including product utilisation (e.g.: manual vs. self-service).

Cycle time per process

Including average service and dwell times.

Queue/dwell space

To identify bottlenecks causing health or security concerns.

Queue time targets

To assess the passenger experience.

Demand assumptions

Design passengers per 60/30/15/5 minutes, for arrivals and departures.

Equipment and infrastructure

To specify the existing and potential units available.

The key outputs are designed to provide: 

  • Clear identification of bottlenecks, focusing on queue time and space target breaches. 

  • Suggested mitigation measures to alleviate the bottlenecks.

The results are given in:

  • Square meters or feet for queue area (dependent on location).

  • Minutes for queue time.

 

Both space per passenger assumptions, as well as the targets, can be easily adjusted to reflect the KPIs of each individual airport.

For each process, the analysis is provided in 4 main blocks that cover: 

  • Demand, including key drivers and intervals. 

  • Passenger Characteristics, defining demand for different products (e.g. manual vs. automated services). 

  • Calculations, allowing for revision of input impacts to expected queue performance against the targets. 

  • Mitigation, demonstrating measures required to bridge the gap (e.g. additional equipment, reduced dwell time,…), against either queue space or time. 

EBEA Consulting can supplement any data gaps with benchmarking and industry standards/best practices.
