Bristol Airport:

Landside shuttle project

Client:

Bristol Airport (BRS) is the commercial airport serving the city of Bristol, England, and its surrounding area. In 2018, it was ranked the ninth busiest airport in the United Kingdom, handling nearly 8.7 million passengers, a 5% increase compared with 2017.

In November 2019, Bristol Airport opened a new Consolidated Car Rental Centre, as part of the parking facilities development.

Bristol Airport business need:

To identify ways of optimising existing landside shuttle network and achieving synergies to accommodate a new service within the network. With the increased demand and system complexity, it was prerequisite to keep costs and environmental impact to the minimum, but without compromising on established levels of service and stakeholders’ needs.

EBEA Consulting solution:

The range of solutions tested has provided BRS with a clearly defined roadmap for future safeguarding and network optimisation.

The project evaluated several scenarios satisfying requirements specified by BRS. This was achieved by completing data analysis to establish and calibrate a baseline model, validated through on-site visits and operations shadowing, to allow for future demand projections and scenarios development and testing.

Benefits:

  • Additional shuttle service without an increase in resources currently allocated to operate the network

  • Maintained Service Level Agreements and passenger proposition for the current circumstances

  • Solutions offering no increase to the airport’s carbon footprint

  • Solutions applicable to further optimisation of the existing network and safeguarding future infrastructure developments
