Airports Council International

Client:

Airports Council International (ACI) World is a global trade representative of the world’s airports. Since 1991, ACI World has represented airports interests with Governments and international organizations such as ICAO. The organisation develops standards, policies and recommended practices for airports, and provides information and training opportunities to raise standards around the world.

ACI World business need:

Given the impacts of COVID-19 on airport operations, it had been recommended that physical distancing was implemented across the airports where practical. One of the areas where physical distancing may not be possible as traffic levels grow is the security checkpoint. Therefore, detailed modelling and simulation were conducted to assess the impact physical distancing has on throughputs and queue capacity.

EBEA Consulting solution:

Through a partnership with Transoft Solutions to use fast-time simulation, two types of security checkpoint and lanes were modelled to address this challenge in the most universal and relatable way. The project evaluated several scenarios for both high-throughput checkpoint with parallel loading lanes configuration, as well as standard-throughput security, relying on the serial-loading lanes set-up. Baseline models were tested for throughput and queue capacity reduction, following three different checkpoint arrangements allowing for the implementation of physical distancing measures.

Benefits:

  • In-detail physical distancing impact assessment and insights relatable for all airport operators

    • Degradation of security checkpoint performance may affect other terminal areas, with any significant congestion build-up calling for additional health and security considerations

  • Safeguarding for the traffic levels increase with plans for new ways of operating security checkpoint

  • Alternative measures that mitigate the need for physical distancing

  • Ability to maintain a safe and healthy experience for all passengers and staff

  • Sustainable recovery of airports and the aviation industry

  • Video materials explaining the modelling and its outcomes

  • A webinar session offering an additional focus on the topic
